The Spirituality of the American Plains Indians:
Myth, Cosmology and Ritual
Dr Harry Oldmeadow
Monday, October 2nd ~ 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm
This talk will explore some of the distinctive features of Native American spirituality, draw some parallels with other nomadic cultures (including those of Australia) and then focus on the symbolic vocabulary of the principal rite of the Plains Indians, the Sun Dance. Some reference will also be made to the place of visions and shamanism in the Native American traditions. The talk will conclude with some remarks about the lessons we might derive from the traditions of the Plains Indians. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.
Cost : $25 (members $20)
The foundation of Daybreak is in Christian spirituality, but we are open to people of all faiths or none.
We aim to offer a place for stillness, resting from the pressures of life and finding peace and connection in our often noisy and busy world. It is not always easy for us to stop and be quiet in the midst of frenetic activity, yet most of us would agree that it is important to step back and be restored inwardly from time to time.
Daybreak House, generously made available to us by the Family Care Sisters, has quiet and welcoming spaces for individuals or groups to engage in reflection and meditation as well as programs for self-awareness and spiritual nurture.
Maximum numbers are 3 to live in and 15 for groups during the day or evening.
If you would like to visit us - to have a look around, get more information or have a cuppa and a chat - please phone and leave a message if necessary. Someone will then call you to arrange a suitable time for you to visit. You will certainly be made very welcome.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
We regret, because of the constraints of the building, that we cannot offer wheelchair access and our main meeting room is upstairs.
